Primetime NFL games bring in the numbers -- and the bets. In an attempt to boost gamer bankrolls, this only occasionally profitable bettor will attempt to stack greenbacks under the lights. As always, fade or follow -- that’s up to you.
The Pick: Jordan Mason anytime TD vs. Bears (+180, DraftKings)
Stiff arming Stripe, Mohawk and romantically dogged Greta, Mason is quite possibly the true goal-line gremlins leader.
Unlike the popularized versions seen in the 80s film, Minnesota’s chalk seeker doesn’t possess malicious or sinister intent. No, the power back is simply driven to score. And also different from the fictionalized creatures, he could reward backers with a bounty of instant riches.
Based on his presumed primary role, the +170 price attached to the Mason anytime TD market is rather absurd. Astonishingly, Aaron Jones, who may be fortunate to score five times all year, sports a lower number (+150). Oh how the betting gods can be terribly kind and merciful!
In his last go round with the Niners a season ago, Mason excelled in multiple efficiency categories. He averaged a ridiculous 5.4 yards per touch (RB9) and 3.35 yards after contact per attempt (RB10). As tracked at PlayProfiler, the pads cracker also finished top-10 in explosive rating and total breakaway runs (9). Skol!
Chicago’s strength defensively should be on the back end. Up front, the Bears aren’t exactly ferocious. Pro Football Focus ranks the D-line a modest No. 18 entering the regular season. Last year, the unit finished a miserable No. 26 in rush EPA D, yielding 4.93 yards per carry and 18 total touchdowns in 17 regular season games. Toothless.
Our buddy Rachel Kryshack at BetAlytics gives Mason a 43.7% chance of scoring six. That’s hardly insignificant -- especially when tossing in the Vikings enter the season with a top-10 run-blocking o-line.
In what could be a higher than expected game total (43.5), Minnesota’s mischievous beast could have backers swinging from the chandelier.
