J.J. McCarthy prop bet: Passing TDs in 2024?

With the 2024 NFL Draft in the rearview mirror, gaming audiences are already presented with long-term investment opportunities. Where should gamblers stack their greenbacks in the season-long props market? Throughout the week, I’ll share my initial thoughts on an available wager tied to this year’s stellar quarterback class.

The pick — J.J. McCarthy UNDER 20.5 passing touchdowns (-110, DraftKings)

DraftKings offer:

The polarizing passer from national champion Michigan fell to QB-needy Minnesota with the No. 10 overall pick. However, he is far from a lock to start for the Vikings, at least initially.

Veteran Sam Darnold, a fellow top pick who entered the league with high expectations in 2018, will push McCarthy in the preseason. Still, even if the rookie secures the Week 1 gig, 21 touchdown passes feel high.

Yes, Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson are a hell of a receiving trio, but McCarthy’s minimized usage in the Wolverines offense and doubts about his decision making suggest there will be a fairly steep learning curve. Also, the Vikings have the fifth-hardest projected strength of schedule in the league.

J.J. to JJ will occasionally be DYNOMITE, but 18-20 air strikes seem more likely in Year 1 for McCarthy.
